Hello, fellow Austin knitter!
Here are the two highlights for me:
** Hill Country Weaver's ** is certainly the first one most mention. It's been around a long time, is on that funky South Congress strip that's so fun to shop on, and has a really quaint feel. Cons: It can be a little claustrophobic and it's not an easy place to take children. We've also noticed that it can be frustrating to shop for a large garment's worth of a dye lot there.
** Bluebonnet Yarn Shoppe ** is technically in Cedar Park (30-45 min drive NW of downtown) but my favorite! It's worth the drive. They have a great selection of high-quality staple yarns in a wide price range (with plenty of each color!), a large selection of nice needles, the staff could not be friendlier, and they love children and even dogs. Cons: If you don't like children or dogs (or women who like to talk and laugh while they knit), you might have to brush elbows with 'em.

There's Hill Country Weavers on S. Congress. It's one of the best yarn shops I've been to and anyone in there can help you with your knitting needs. Also, The Knitting Nest is coming to Austin soon, on W. Slaughter.

Hill Country Weavers. It's a very nice shop, with wonderful yarns and knowledgable staff. (Plano is a sub of Dallas and Spring is just North of Houston.) Twisted Yarns in Spring is Awesome if you ever get this way!

I don't live anywhere near there, but it looks like you might be looking for someplace like this:

If you get there, get a couple of skeins for me, please!
