Rebar would be left long enough to tie to for the next pour of a detached garage.

Make a lap joint about 2' long and embed short vertical rebars spaced 6" apart. Be sure to add at least 6" depth to the first pour at the overlap.

a cold joint is never a good idea but it is done all the time when it cant be helped. as long as you let the re-bar hang out you should be okay...
