Did your parents make home made ice cream, did you all have to help crank? Those buckets and inserts were large and it was hard to crank that handle. Worth every minute it was soooo good.

Yes I remember delicious homemade ice cream, and yes I helped crank. My Dad loved homemade ice cream and he loved to tease or joke, well I remember a time when the neighborhood got together to make ice cream and I'm sure you remember the rock salt we used. Well, some of the boys were asking a lot of questions, etc., so my Dad told them if they could hold a piece of this rock in their hand and run around the house without dropping it he would give them a dollar. I bet you know how many dollars he handed out.....zero. I still say the hand cranked made the best ice cream, maybe it was because we worked so hard for it, and waited longer.

Yep! I was the one who got to sit on top! Loved that!!

I never had to crank as I was so small but, I remember family members taking turns with it! Adding more salt and ice!

You bet it was good and so were the times!

I loved it when we made homemade ice cream. I remember Vanilla, I don't think we made any other kind. I was such a wimp, I couldn't turn it very much. My sister was much better at it...the nearest thing to it today, is the Blue Bell homemade Vanilla...it is too good though to be sold outside the South....I'm kidding...but it is available only in the South.

Oh yes! At reunions we would have several going each with a different flavor. My favourite was strawberry.
We used the wooden bucket type and had to take turns turning the handle.
I know you can buy the electric ones that turn themselves but I wonder if it tastes the same?

OMIGOSH - have YOU brought back one of my most cherished memories!

My grandad had cherry trees in the back yard - and he had a neighbor who had a strawberry patch. He would get the fruit and make home made ice cream in the great big really heavy metal contraption and after putting in the cream, fruit and whatever else he'd churn and he'd let me lick the 'dasher'...then he'd put the ice cream into silver ice cube type trays and put them in the ICEBOX...HEAVEN...JUST PLAIN HEAVEN

I remember, that it seemed forever, before the ice cream was ready to eat. After the ice cream was ready, we would eat it too fast and get a brain freeze! Worth it? You bet!

I never got to experience that growing up. But my sister's husband is a country boy and he made peach ice cream that way for everybody to taste.
