As dissapointing as it is my new house doesn't support cable, so ill have to get DSL (sigh) ive had highspeed forever, and im so unfamiliar with DSL, what exactly is it, and how much slower is it than highspeed, or does that depend on the carrier service? I know its a telephone line, so does this mean I can't recieve calls if im on the internet or something? normally im good with stuff like this, but ive never had dsl, so help!!

DSL is also highspeed. cable is usually 6 megs. DSL starts at 1.5 megs which is the most common but you can get 3meg or 6 meg as well, plus since cable is on a shared network and local use can affect the speed it ends up being slower then a DSL circuit. And DSL and voice (talking on the phone ) are on different frequncies so you can do both at the same time

Well DSL and Cable Internet are very identical while one can be faster than the other all in all they both perform much better than old modem line. You can use the phone line while surfing the internet and that was one of the features of DSL and you can also receive g\faxes if you have a fax machine connected on there. But I would recommend DSL as an option if cable is not available.

I don't know why people automatically assume that DSL is slower than cable -- this is sometimes the case but doesn't have to be. It completely depends on the ISP.

Typically DSL providers a higher upload rate than cable so you can actually send data faster than you could with cable. It just depends.

Before you sign up for DSL or cable, check to see if Verizon Fios is available in your area -- I switched to Verizon Fios a fwe months ago from Comcast and IT IS AMAZING! 30 Mbps download / 3 Mbps upload for $35/month -- its totally kicking cable & DSLs butt!!

To the people who are saying DSL is 1-3Mbps -- my neighbor has DSL that is 8Mbps -- much faster than most cable providers (who typically only give you 3Mbps)

Cable is 3-5Mbps (million bits per second). DSL is 1-3 Mbps (in most locations) but you won't see a big difference yourself. Cable is more dependable but DSL will work too. They put adaptor on your phones so that the Internet and phone can share the same phone line. The adaptors make the Internet waves travel on the top half of the wire and the phone (voice waves) travel on the bottom half of the wire (if you think of it by cutting a wire in half and looking into it). You can be on the Internet that way and not effect your phone. Most phone companies offer different speeds of DSL. The quicker it is the more you pay monthly. Remember to ask for Upload and Download speeds when making your decisions.

You can recieve calls while on the internet. DSL isn't all that much slower than cable so don't worry it's not as bad as people make it out to be...

Your phone DSL should have several plans, starter, middle, and really high speed. With cable DSL your internet connection speed can actually slow down when more subscribers are using it, not so with phone DSL. I had a 100Mbps connection when I used a phone DSL.

Dsl is just about the same as cable and it does not tie up your phone line.
