If cable is not an option consider using your cellular phone provider as an option. Besides physically using your phone as a modem, various providers also sell interface cards you can install to a laptop similar to a wireless WIFI card. Otherwise, satellite and ISDN are usually available regardless of location, but have a steeper price. You can also try accelerated dial-up which caches or compresses the pages you view so that it appears faster. Though this is convenient, it does not work with movies or file downloads, these cannot be compressed or cached to the extent of web-pages.

I'll try my best to answer this one, if you can't get DSL you could check with your local cable company and see if they offer internet and I am pretty sure they do give 30 days trial period if you're not satisfied. Other than that you would need to use a dialup service such as America On Line or Netzero.

I have some friends that are in that same position (ie. the only optiont hey have for Internet is dialup)

If you want a better connection (though not as good as DSL) you can subscribe to satellite -- it has high latency, but is much better than dialup.

If you can't get DSL, you're left with dial-up, cable, or satellite as practical choices.

I would try to get cable first. If that's not available, you might have to settle for ISDN.
