Based on my "Gradings" Avast! Home Edition, is the best of the TWO. Which, indeed is true.

BUT, When you add another Scanner to the pile, Lets see which is better!

AV: "Avira AntiVir"

Pro's:
>>As Light as a Feather
>>Scheduled Scanning & Updating
>>Highest Detection Rates Possible (For Freeware, and beats some Paid Versions of Software!)
>>UI is Fairly easy to use & Understand
>>Includes a Resistant Shield, which scans "On-Demand"
>>Includes an Anti-Rootkit Feature which searches for Rootkits which may hide Trojans, Worms and other pieces of Malware from being detected.

Con's:
>>Considering its "Free-Ware", It has no Con's otherwise.

Overall Score: 90%
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Now Lets Compare Scores Between the three.

1. Avira AntiVir- 90% (A)
2. Avast! Home Edition- 80% (B-)
3. AVG Free Edition- 75% (C+)

Now, Based on this Comparison, Avira AntiVir is the best of the "3 A's".

I found avg7.5 free download was the best of the two. It seemed to scan the computer easier and faster than Avast. AVG seemed more compatible with vista as well

AVG free isn't total crap, but it's mediocre. It ranks about 10% lower on detection nowadays than a few years ago. Avast scores better in every detection test.

Kapersky and NOD32 are the best overall, but those are commercial packages. So of the free choices, take Avast.

only problem i see with avg is that your not fully protected and in time will get a virus. avg isn't that good. it is good for it being free, look at it this way, you get what you pay for.

AVG Free is crap!

Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. These types love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

In test,

after test,
http://winnow.oitc.com/AntiVirusPerformance.html
etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam, AVG fares poorly.

AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.

AVG. = Average, at best!

There are much better free alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:

and Avast:
