I have had this problem for months now. In my left hand 2 of my fingers go numb and then ache really bad. It's not so bad when doing bicep curls but i find activities such as tricep press' and overhead press' intensify the problem; and when i tighten my grip on the dumbell. I have been told it could be a trapped nerve; but im not sure. Please can anyone help me with this ?

Yes it is more than likely that there is an impingement on a nerve. I suspect that it is in your neck though, not your Shoulder. The nerves exit (and enter) your spine at various points throughout the spinal column. The way you describe it... " not so bad with bicep curls" tells me that your body position and stress point effects the nerve. I believe the nerve for the digits are at C-2 to C3 (the second and third vertebra). A Chiropractor or a massage therapist can repair the problem. What they would do is, distract the facets to take the pressure off the nerve. This is done by having yo lay on your back or sit in a low chair, have you relax completely. The practitioner would stand behind you (if you are sitting) or sit at your head (if you are laying down) then cup their hands around your jaw with the heal of their hands resting below your mandibular ramus (the bony protrusions below your earlobe on your jaw bone. With your head in neutral position ( this is achieved when the chin and chest are at 90 degrees to each other) and very gently lift(if you are sitting) or pull (if you are laying down) You MUST relax all of your muscles... it is helpful to take a deep breath before and exhale as they distract the vertebra in your neck.Do this several times with a few seconds in between Good luck>>> it feels great!

You have probably just slept in an awkward position. All your body weight rested on your arm and might of cut off circulation causing cramp.I had the same thing and I was really scared and the whole motor in my hand wouldn't work but I tried some thing and it went away. Try a sling maybe, frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel, warm cloth or putting them in nice warm water with some bubble bath in and watch a nice film and eat some nibbles or a milkshake. Prop it up on a pillow and keep bathing it in hot water. Make sure the skin is aired off and wear cosy clothes without tight sleeves and no gloves. You can get hand warmers to hold as well. Maybe try massaging them even with something like Vaseline ect. If they don't start to feel that better maybe a trip to the doctors. Try to avoid typing or writing ect and let the fingers stretch out and relax. A hand bandage might be good/ sling...That is what I did then slowly used it again.

Most likely condition to cause this is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. You need to see your doctor and have it evaluated. They can tell by a few questions and an examination including a Tinel's test and O'Phelan's Test if you have the condition. This can respond to rest, but in weight lifters most frequently requires a simple procedure in which they release a band of connective tissue (fascia) which goes across the nerve.

nerves cause numbness, it s getting inflamed with a specific movement.you could have an abnormal bone growth or bone spur.the best thing to do is take an anti inflammatory like ibuprofen and hops it goes away.if it persists you would probably want to do some tests to determine where its being pinched.it sounds like it your ulnar nerve , which goes from your neck to your finger tips.so anything in between those two points which can include a disc issue in your neck.99% of disc issues in the neckcan be cured with physical therapy.

Ask your doctor about an exercise routine. Regular exercise, such as walking three times a week, may reduce neuropathy pain, improve your muscle strength and help control blood sugar levels. Gentle routines such as yoga and tai chi might also help.

It sounds like a trapped nerve to me, and you're aggravating it with specific movements.
