because a broken bone is considered an emergency but not near the emergency that heart failure is....pain or injury that is NOT life threatening can wait until all life threatening injuries or illnesses are taken care of. that's how it works.

If you are not passed out, bleeding or screaming constantly in pain you are generally not considered an on sight priority. The people who can walk into an ER are usually not as badly banged up as the people who are being flown in or come by ambulance--so you won't see the 5 other people who showed up while you are waiting for your broken leg to be set.
While a broken leg is certainly an emergency and needs attention, it just isn't the same kind of emergency as someone with difficulty breathing, a possible heart attack, or other life threatening conditions.
If the ER triage unit does its job correctly, the patients are always seen with a care to the severity of the conditions.

Congratulations. If it took a long time, then you were not seriously hurt. Therefore you could get your band-aid (that you could have got from your doc. as well) and get out and go on with your life. If everyone only went to the emergency room for serious emergencies then it would not take long at all. Unfortunately, people without medical insurance use it as their doctor for minor things so they will not have to pay. We have such a broken system. It's sad really.

BECAUSE EVERY EMERGENCY ROOM DEALS WITH AN EMERGENCY ON A TRIAGE SYSTEM.
THOSE WITH INJURIES MOST LIFE-THREATENING ARE SEEN FIRST.
IF YOU HAD BEEN RUN OVER BY A CAR OR BEEN SHOT YOU'D GET FIRST PLACE.
