I have had good luck with the peanut butter. The trick is to put the peanut butter on the underneath side also. When you set the latch, be sure to set it so that it is just barely holding, and the slightess movement will release the hasp.
Good luck.

Our best success was to take one-half of an english walnut and tie it to the trap with dental floss. Then smear it with peanut butter or soft cheese. Works like a charm... we once got two mice in one trap.

You either have smart mice or crappy traps. Are you using creamy or crunchy? I think crunchy peanut butter would make better bait because the chunks would make it easier for a mouse to set the trap off. Being that he wouldn't simply be able to lick the chunks away.

We always use peanut butter. Make it very thin so they can't just sit next to the trap and lick at it. If they have to lick it off the trap itself, they need to step up onto it to make that happen and sets off the trap.
We have to trap our mice because they carry Hanta Virus.

Small pieces of frosted, blueberry PopTart, smeared with a thin layer of peanut butter, placed in the center of a glue trap. Snap traps are awful!

the peanut butter is still the best thing for it, continue using it, but set your trap to be more sensitive to the touch . so it will go off with much less force

I would suggest the stickiest peanut butter you can find. Needs to be something they have to really work at to get off the trigger. Velveeta cheese smashed into the trigger works as well, but peanut butter seems to attract them faster.

Peanut butter has worked for me in the past, BUT I'd rather the little b@#$#@ds didn't get in my house in the first place. I heard putting peppermint oil on little cotton balls and strewing them around inside your cabinets will repel mice. So far, I haven't seen any mice, but Fall hasn't arrived yet, either....so....that will be the real test.

This is probably one of those old wives tales but I was told many a year ago to put out a small dish of a soda like Coke. Supposedly mice cant belch so after they lap enough up they get gassy and explode.

Something that can be tied on so they have pull it. OR maybe you need a better trap. The cheese should work. I don't think it matters if it get hard.
