38? You are a lucky gal! And I think I'm in trouble! lol So behind in that area ... but am working on getting rich so it should all work out in the end! lol

At any rate ... I did it way wrong ... you should start as soon as you start working. Get a ROTH IRA and get saving. This is besides getting a 401K if that applies to you. At this rate a 401K won't be enough for the young ones to survive when they're older.

My cousin was so smart ... he became a cop at 21 ... started a retirement savings and when he turns 35 he'll already be a millionaire because of it. Grrr! I wish I would have had that good a head on my shoulders at that age!

Good question ... most young people don't take this seriously or think about it enough when they're young!

I'm 20 and working my own schedule at a hospital until I graduate nursing school. I could start saving now with a retirement plan, but I don't make enough or work enough to do that now. So, I'm planning on saving like 2% or 5% of my paychecks as soon as I get a full time job as a nurse when I graduate debt free (hopefully). That way I never have to be an old retired Walmart door attendant.

hi
god gave our life span of 100 yrs.but mostly we live up to 70-80 or more.
if we maintain ourself in proper manner we will be stonger enough to work upto 60-65 yrs.
saving for retirement-
at old age what we require: own house, money for meeting the needs.
*make a own house
*save money for the needs.
♦when we get into the job 4rm that moment start saving .
this is done upto our children complete their school.
then stop saving .
from this time spend all the money on children i.e,higher education, fulfilling ur dreams of luxurious life.& enjoy with u r children, etc
when childrens study complets then u dont require to spend a lot anymore.
♦again start saving for our self till we r capable.enough
in this 2 stages which we saved this could be more than enough what we required.
by this way we can ensure happy living in later life.
hope u like it.

I agree with everybody who say to start as young as possible, I see it as becoming harder and harder.
Student debt, buying a home, raising a family, the drive to force labour costs down, medical care and all those other things that occur in life.
Many will spend their live on an income that barely covers their needs, let alone put something aside for a rainy day, and retirement.

Just a thought from the other-side of the world. I don't think it will be much difference States sides.

Tell me your secret, how did you retire so young! I want to retire so bad but won't be able to for years. I think people should start saving for it as soon as they get their first job. ♥j

I would like to see a scheme where the government could assist those who can't afford to manage their funds themselves.
Sure there are a lot of people who will be in well paying jobs for their professional careers and are competent when it comes to things like that.
A rocket scientist, brain surgeon and a street worker (not a hooker) may not know much about those things and will need help.

About three months after you start working. The earlier you start, the more likely you'll be to have money for your Happy Golden Years.

Well, I have no idea about this, but I would say as soon as possible. You definitely want all your money saved up as quickly as possible! So you can enjoy the rest of your life and not have to work anymore! :)
