I think sometimes they're more closely related than people may prefer sometimes. Sometimes people want their sex without any spiritual involvement whatsoever, and sometimes people are uncomfortable with sensuality as an aspect of religion and/or spirituality.
People occasionally want sexual activity for purely physical reasons, or for entirely selfish emotional ones. I don't make judgment calls on that practice entirely, provided it with mutual consent and awareness of the perameters of the relationship. Likewise, I understand that some people are uncomfortable with the religious component of your question. Sexual energy to them is anathema to "higher" spiritual functioning.
However, for the most part they are almost inextricably intertwined. Surgery itself is a spiritual experience. Surgeons are fascinating people because they spend so much time literally inside other people's bodies. The fact that they can develop a "god complex" speaks most eloquently to this. GIven the anatomical realities of sex, allowing another person into one's self or going inside another's self is fundamentally spiritual; it is an interaction of our individual spirits.

Well, as it stands with the TV evangelists, they almost all seem to get into trouble with this one focus in mind. Eastern religions (in the highest form of their religions) tend to focus away from it, as do our monks in western religions but, the idea that sex is still in the equation as target to shoot away from shows that sex or the lack thereof is still in play. Mormonism was in the past a strong focus on multiple wives, and with that you "can't" tell me sex wasn't the focus. And the future has hints that multiple participant marriages may be in the future. Why? SEX! However, I have read the Bible, and sex was a big focus in the old testament, it seems that it lost it's worth in the new testament. There are some books not in the Bible that speak a bit more on the subject, but, seriously not that much. So let's get down to brass tacks. If you were a member of a church that said "NO MORE SEX" or "MORE SEX" would you stay or leave? Personally I would say "so long fellas"! The church doesn't have that authority.

It depends on which religion is being talked about. Some religions preach sacrifice, which would make sex the most evil thing to that religion. What could be more selfish than the most pleasurable act known to man? I do believe that there are religions that preach that joy is the center of life, though, and that would make sex a huge reward, not just a way of keeping our species alive. My question would have been, if joy is not the center of life, what could be?

I can see how religion might be offended by sex but not sex offended by religion.
Religion spends a lot of time trying to control sex.
Sex spends a lot of time trying to reach a spiritual high.
I think without religion sex would be as natural as breathing.
Meanwhile without sex, religion would be ignoring one of man's baser desires.
I really think both sex and religion come to depend on one another. So, "No", both probably like things just the way they are.
BTW, I hope this wasn't about some priest getting caught with his hansds on some altar boy again. That would be funny but so off topic.

Sex is the Foundation which gives birth to Healthy religion.. first one has tobe fulfilled physically ,
sex is the need of body,
culture is the need of mind..
religion is the need of soul
Once the lower needs are fulfilled then only higher needs can be fulfilled.. it is just the law of heriarchy... Religion is the top of the house and Sex is the foundation of house.. both supporting each other..
This will be the final concept of modern man of life if he has to survive in this mad mad world where violence and killings have become daily affair.. man's energies are diverted to non creative purposes or suppressed so that he becomes slave to Devilish Designs of Evil Powers...

they are actually interrelated, on roman catholic religion, "do not commit adultery" is the number 7 commandment. lol
Anyway, i say they are interrelated because sex is a biological want, its an act brought upon by the feeling of being wanted and giving pleasure to thy self and to your partner. oftentimes, it can cause someone to sin, mostly crimes committed are sex related crimes. and how come i say religion is related? on my opinion, religion is not just about the beliefs and fellowship, above all the praising and adulation, religion gives us the divine law wherein it encourages us to live peacefully and harmoniously with our fellowmen. mostly, laws governing every nation is drafted from the bible. I'm not sure if I'm making sense...lol
