Defamation of character is the despoiling of a person's reputation by the dissemination of false information. In other words, if you went around telling lies about someone, and they could prove that it caused them damage in such a way that it impaired their ability to live as they had been (especially if it limited their ability to earn), they could sue you for defamation of character. Setting damages can be difficult, however, unless the person has a profession which has been damaged, in which case, the damages would be the loss of wages.
