Fish do not have 3 second memories. You can actually train a fish to do simple tricks, and this would be impossible if it only had a 3 second memory. Check out this site: http://fish-school.com/

Fish are incredibly intelligent. How do they know who feeds them, when i go to my pond my fish rush to my hoping for food, but when anyone else comes they just look at them and carry on swimming, they also know what time i feed them as they will all be waiting at the feeding time.It is definatley not true that they have a 3 second memory

Fish do not have a 3 second memory.

There no need to run scientific tests on this one, anyone who keeps fish will tell you this is not true.

When i walk past the tank my Oscar is in, he will go to side of tank nearest where I'm standing and beg for food but he dont do it if any1 else walks past tank.

When I'm feeding he pokes his head out water a little and lets me pet him.

I used to keep a breeding trap in his tank with fry, he used to stare at the fish watching them until 1 day i came home and it was knocked off side and he had ate all the fish, im convinced he done it.

It is not true. My fish actually know who I am. I have a wife and 3 kids, but I am the only one who feeds them. When one of them go near the tanks there is no reaction, but when I go near it they swim near the surface. In my freshwater tank my Oscar will sometimes jump out of the water and hit the lid when I walk by if he is hungry, but doesn't even seem to notice anyone else in the family. I must say I have never even heard this myth before, but I can assure you it is just that... a Myth

My goldfish eat food out of my hand, but they will not go near anyone else who tries to feed them. Even when I was away for the weekend, when I came back they still recognised me. So this proves that they must have more than a 2 second memory.

Fact 1: many fish get excited when they see humans.
Fact 2: in aquariums, humans feed fish

Conclusion: Fish associate humans with food. Fish will be excited by humans throughout their entire lives. Association demonstrates memory. Therefore, fish have quite advanced memories.

The 3 second memory myth was busted on MythBusters. They trained goldfish to go through tunnels to get their food, and they felt that busted the 3 second rule.

They did this on MythBusters...they busted it. They actually taught goldfish mazes to get to their food...and they remembered it the next day so obviously their memory goes longer than 3 seconds.

I think that the 3second thing is just a myth but they do have short memories compared to most animals

e.g a dog would remember a cat that tried to attack it once and a fish wouldn't
