I am replacing an old thermostat in our house and needed some wiring assitance. We purchased a new Honeywell RTH6300B thermostat and the wiring appears easy, now the question.

On the old thermostat we have the following wires:

W
G
Y
RH
RC

Now .. I have a red cable on the RC terminal and a jumper wire from the RC to RH. On the new thermostat it says if you have both R and RC wire to remove the jumper .. Now TECHNICALLY I only have an R wire, so should I be OK connecting the R wire to the R port and leaving the jumper in?

Yes.It doesn't matter if you put it to the R terminal with a jumper to RC,or if you put it to the RC terminal with the jumper to R.It is the same thing. Some systems have two separate power sources for the AC. and the heating. This is the reason for the R[or on some thermostats RH] and the RC [for cooling] terminals. And just so you will know the red wire will feed power to the thermostat the Y will activate the cooling system, the W will activate the heating system, and the G will activate the fan.

You can call honeywell and check, but you should be OK. If you have it wired up already, then turn on the AC and set the temp down to 60 and see if the AC comes on. Now change the thermostat to heat, and set the temp up to 85 and see if the furnance clicks on.

If both of these things happen, then you should be OK, and it will work.

Call Honeywell. I had questions when I went to wire up my thermostat a couple of years ago. I had one wire that I couldn't figure out what to do with it....They set me straight in no time. They will want to know the model and make of your air handler in the attic....

While the first long answer is nice, I think you have a problem because the digital needs a complete circuit and while you have the red, you don't have the black. You may have to pull another wire or another cable (6 wire) to get it.
