I am 15 and I love the oldies very much. Since I was born in the 90's I was wondering what new sound Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart delivered?

Sgt. Pepper broke ground by mixing the traditional guitar, bass and drums with such instruments as a mouth organ, a harmonium and the Indian sitar and dilruba. Classical strings and brass joined in, and all were recorded and mixed in ingenious, original ways. This had never been done before. They used new recording techniques that had never been heard of before.

Before 'Sgt. Pepper,' guitars were usually run through an amplifier, which was mic'd and fed into the mixing console to be recorded. But for 'Sgt. Pepper,' The Beatles and George Martin experimented with 'directly injecting' first Paul's bass, and then other guitars directly into the mixer. Today, 'direct boxes' are a mainstay in most recording studios.

I think the recognition of the innovation was people sitting back after the fact saying, yeah, that was really something special.

Sgt. Pepper's approached the album as a single concept, a story told in multiple parts - this had been done in jazz before, but was completely new to Top 40 music, and its commercial success proved its worth. The Rolling Stones immediately followed with "Satanic Majesty's Request," and the race was on to out-conceptualize the other guys...
