A third nipple is more common than you think. I have one, about 6 cms under my left breast,(I didn't know what it was until a doctor told me) It turns out my mother and grandmother were also endowed! So it looks as if it is inherited.
I have since found out that they occur on the 'milk line' as you would expect to see the extra nipples on a cat or dog. These human extra nipples are not functioning (thank goodness) and look more like a small, raised dimple, they can be used as distinguishing marks for identification. As far as I know they can occur in both sexes but are more likely to be found in females as you would expect.

They are called supernumerary nipples, and can occur congenitally in either males or females. The condition is rare. The extra nipples are typically located a few inches below the primary nipples, and are usually less well developed. They may occur on one side only or on both sides. In some cases additional nipples can occur below the first extra pair, essentially lining up down the sides of the ventral trunk, just as they would on a cat or dog. People usually have them removed surgically for cosmetic reasons, though they pose no particular health risk.

Humans, being mammals, can have nipples anywhere along the milk line from armpit to groin. The norm is two around heart level (middle finger on nipple and heel of hand is over heart).
However, they may form anywhere along that line.
It is rare for a third nipple to form but not unheard of. It is exceedingly rare in males as the production of mammary tissue, including nipples, is linked to Oestrogen levels and the XX chromosomes of females.
Male nipples are a vestigal organ and show that all embryos are technically female until the testosterone push occurs due to the Y chromosome and switches the embryo over to male. In rare cases the XY embryo does not react to the testosterone and an XY female baby is born.

OMG, did the dr grant you with any explanation why that's going on? Are you breasfeeding? i understand that as quickly as the newborn sucks exterior the nipple section, the breast can become contaminated and this hurts like hell...I even have been informed... to handle this i will grant you with a house therapy which will help you hopefully. do presses with heat water and destilled vinegar and salt. this might help you with soreness and soreness. If available carry your breast interior the water for 5 minutes or so and dry. If this gets worse pass to the scientific expert and get a explanation why that's going on. get extra suitable quickly and take care.

un sure of how rare it is but both of my brothers have an extra. it is located about 3 inches below the right nipple on one brother and about 3 inches below the left on the other. and i only have the two usual ones. so i'm unsure that the estrogen thing holds up.

Where did you get your figures from? I've always thought that a third nipple was exceedingly rare. I've certainly never seen one myself.
