THIS is why we attacked Iraq. GWB gave up on the FDR/Truman model of democracy building that the Kennedy/Johnson administrations subsequently embraced so foolishly in S.E. Asia. This model demanded complete destruction, and you build the democracy from the ashes. This stopped working shortly after WWII. Why? Beats me. Someone much smarter than I is going to have to answer that question.

Were we just to do this in Afghanistan, then ANY oil-backed country with a wild hair up its butt would be able to roll into Kabul and take over the country. By overthrowing another country that DOES have access to oil, we have provided Afghanistan with an oil-backed democratic ally in the neighborhood.
