hi, My mother lives in Virgina and she cannot get high speed internet (cable or DSL) in her area. Is there a way ( know there is satellite but from what I hear it is expensive and it's only high speed one way..) to get high speed internet without paying an arm and a leg instead of using dial up? Thank you!!

My parents have the same problem -- well actually DSL is finally available to them but they have to pay $60/month for some crappy 750k/750k connection. I live in the city and use Verizon FIos -- 30Mbps download/3Mbps upload for $35/month. You can see who is getting screwed!

Anyways, if there is no DSL or Cable option for her, she can use satellite, but be sure to get the satellite package that both sends and receives over the satellite link (some only download via satellite and you still have to send over dialup)

Satellite is more expensive that DSL or Cable because you have to buy the equipment (usually its around $600) but once you buy it you own it. Monthy service is about $50/month.

One thing I've never liked about satellite is the latency -- it doesn't work good for things like VOIP. Also, some satellite providers limit your bandwidth use so watch out for the fine print.
