In all, 41 deaths in the South and Midwest have been confirmed as heat-related, and other deaths are suspected, authorities said. The Tennessee Valley Authority, the nation’s largest public utility, shut down one of three units at the Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Athens, Ala., on Thursday because water drawn from the Tennessee River was exceeding a 90-degree average over 24 hours. “We don’t believe we’ve ever shut down a nuclear unit because of river temperature,” said John Moulton, spokesman for the Knoxville, Tenn.-based utility.

A spontaneous fire at an Arlington, Texas playground has prompted the school district to take action.
Officials say no one was around to start the fire at an elementary school last week. Surveillance video captured the fire. The playground was surrounded with woodchips.

TOKYO — Japan sizzled through its hottest day on record Thursday, as a heat wave reportedly claimed at least 13 lives across the country and spurred fears of an electricity shortage.
The mercury hit 105.6 degrees Fahrenheit in the western city of Tajimi and also the central city of Kumagaya on Thursday afternoon, breaking a previous national record of set in 1933, according to the Meteorological Agency.
Elsewhere, rail tracks were bent out of shape in the sun, and authorities struggled to deal with fire alarms set off erroneously by rising temperatures, according to news reports.

Scientists have determined that the ice in Greenland and the Arctic is melting so rapidly that much of it could be gone by the end of the century. (See photos from the Arctic.)
The results could be catastrophic for polar people and animals, while low-lying lands as far away as Florida could be inundated by rising sea levels. (Read a story, see a map of how warming may toast Florida's coast).

(CNN) -- Arctic sea ice is melting at a rate far quicker than predicted by climate change computer models and could disappear completely before the middle of the century, scientists have warned.
The study, published in the latest edition of the journal Geophysical Research Letters, found that the actual rate at which summer sea ice had shrunk per decade during the past 50 years was more than three times faster than an average of 18 of the most highly regarded climate simulations.

Well I know here in the U.S., the government does not want us to worry about it, because it is closely tied with there masters, the corporations. They want this to happen, and in a few years it will be even more obvious. The earth is saying to us, you are giving me a fever so either you do something to change the way you live, or you will go extinct so I can heal myself.

Any of you mythers been up in Canada or Alaska and seen how the glaciers are receding and on occasion already long previous? there is a great number of evidence that international warming exists. the only actual question is why. it must be merely yet another age the Earth is going by using and mankind might have little or no pertaining to it. even with the clarification, mankind is actual going to be tormented by using it and the greater all of us be attentive to approximately those impacts the greater effective we are in a position to strengthen ability of dealing with them. Why has this become this way of political soccer, merely because you hate the messenger? organic failures happen each and all the time and it is merely yet another one. we are in a position to the two practice for them as maximum suitable as attainable or handle the aftermath.

The "CO2" theory was recently proven wrong. Blame the sun.
The hottest years on record were in the 1930's. Not 1998 as Al Gore claims. NASA has just released temperature corrections.
And from your link: "breaking a previous national record of set in 1933, according to the Meteorological Agency."
http://www.usatoday.com/weather/news/2007-08-16-japan-heat_N.htm
"The hottest year since 1880 becomes 1934 instead of 1998, which is now just second; 1921 is third."

next you're going to tell me that humans caused the global warming that occurred in the 10th century AD even though they weren't driving SUVs.
and the one that started 10,000 years ago even though, afaik, humans had no cities yet.
Did you see the one about upper atmosphere warming over the Pacific being caused by the Asian Brown Cloud? [Asian Brown Cloud is caused by poor people burning wood and cow dung for cooking.] And about how this has more effect than all the SUVs in the world?
aside from Hilliary's comment above, there isn't anything humanity can do about global warming ... the sun is in a cyclical warm period and you can't change that no matter what happens.
{according to NASA, there is 'global warming' on Mars and Neptune as well. but they don't have any humans.}
:-)

Where I live, the weather has been downright balmy. All summer temps have been running below normal. Today's high was 72 degrees. This is the fourth year in a row (as far as I can remember) that we have had a mild summer. I live in SW Pennsylvania. Anyone who doesn't like the heat should move here.

Smaller cars. More plants to consume the CO2. And here's a crazy idea-- I remember hearing that when large volcano eruptions have occurred, the volcanic dust, while creating a huge mess, also brought down the planet's temperature. Perhaps we could look at "causing" some eruptions?

The most prudent practical solution would be to invest in over-engineered infrastructure. Build levies higher than you expect to need them to be (or even just maintain them propperly - that'd've saved New Orleans); have excess power and water distribution capability to deal with the demand of unexpected heat waves and cold snaps; that sort of things.

Here is my take on Gobal warming. Is it happening, well it sure looks like it. Is man responible, somewhat I think. But the bigger problem is there are just too many people on this earth to support. Earth is bigger than mankind I think. I believe it could not support the dinosaurs anymore so it reacted!!!!! This just might be our plight one day also.Don't really think we get a say in it!!!
