One could join the NSDAP like every other political party. The party and all it's sub organizations like the SA and the SS were joined for many reasons. Opportunism was the most popular one during the 1930's.
Who could join? Nearly everybody. The satement that catholics couldn#t join is totally wrong. The NSDAP was founded in Bavaria were most people still are catholics. Excluding them from membership would have been the best way to make sure that the party never made it out of the pub were it was formed.
Who did not join? Those who did not believe in NS-propaganda or the goals of NS-politics. But being not in the party might cause problems. And some people became honorary members of SA or SS and therefor became also honorary party members without intention.

The Nazi Party has originally formed in 1919. And by 1933 when the Nazi Party came legally to power, everybody tried to join, but were not accepted.

It was tough for the average German to join the Nazi Party.

General Rommel and Admiral Doenitz never joined the Nazi Party.

Much the same as you would join the Republican party today would be. You go to the headquarters and say I want to join up and they have you fill out papers and introduce you around to the party members.

The Nazi party started as a political party.

Well I said to my good pal Drexal, I got this old dirty T-Shirt, it use to be white but now its brown, and I was thinking can I maybe become a Official Party Member. He says OK and I join (Member 54=5054). Then the very next day he lets this Austrian Corporal in, some sort of Bohemian that paints those little things on the back of your sofa. Well needless to say within a few years the party went to Hell in a hand-basket and they even started giving us socialists a hard time like we was Jews or something. Well the rest is history. Ha Ha Ha!

Hitler liked the Muslims and the Muslims liked Hitler-read your history.

And It was a Catholic General that put 2.5 Million Jews to death at Auschwitz.

Originally it was a political party like any other. So you joined it the same way. And that also why people did no join, not everyone shares the same political views.

Two additional facts: 1. Hitler was a German who was living in Austria. 2. On the list of non eligible people for the NAZI Party were Slavic people.

It was easy, join, or die. You didn't even have to pass a test.

You could not however be:

Jewish
Catholic
Muslim
Asian
African
Communist
etc, etc, etc...
