I spent the first 48 years of my life in a state of "sever, chronic depression" as determined by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory which was a psychiatric evaluation test I took finally at the age of 38. So this answer comes from "the horse's mouth" so to speak. Certain small activities can bring temporary alleviation of symptoms; whistling, reading funny comics, joking with people, etc... But the underlying cause needs to be determined and remedied. In my case, at first, drugs seemed to help (Prozac), and later others. But even they did nothing for the alienation and loneliness I felt every day. I no longer need drugs. I married a good christian gal 7 1/2 years ago (from the Philippines) and have been cured! Pretty remarkable for such a severe case!

It maybe depends on the person, like a depressed person might not want people to take notice that he/she is depressed so they whistle to cover it up...but I normally would think people that are in a good mood whistle...

I don't know depressed people enjoy whistling or even listening to it. As for most of us it is very annoying to hear, especially constantly.

huh. Sometimes I whistle because I am happy. Other times because I am a little afraid...but when I am sad? No, never whistle then. I would say no. Unless a person is mentally unstable?

I'm actually depressed about something at the moment, and I just found myself whistling a minute ago. So, I guess so. Nice question. @__@;

Whistling past the graveyard. It is probably more of a coping mechanism.
