DSL = Digital Subscriber Line -- it runs over a phone line
Cable comes over your cable TV connection

Cable and DSL are considered broadband internet connections -- they're fast.

DSL has the advantage that you don't share bandwidth/speed with youre neighbors -- regardless of whether your neighbors are using their internet or not you get the same speed.

With cable, you usually have a little faster connection, but your speed is dependent upon how many other people are using the internet in your neighborhood.

Generally, DSL has a higher upload speed than cable, and cable has a higher download speed than DSL.

Note: You can get DSL that is faster than cable and visa versa -- it just depends on what you pay for.

Cable has the most potential for speed, but Cable companies don't give out more than DSL simply because it costs them more. It's all about competition.

Recently I changed from Comcast Cable (3Mb download 385k/upload) to Verizon Fios (30Mbps download, 3 Mbps upload) for $35/month -- its great and i recommend it if you have it in your area! It kicks DSL and Cable's butt!

DSL and cable are quite similar. The main difference is the upload speed (the speed at which you send a file to another pc); cable is faster. Download speeds are comparable.
