I saw the movie The ELEPHANT MAN and what I noticed was the majority of people threw rocks at John merrick while only a selected few came to his rescue. Does this point to the fact that majority of people in the world have no conscience?

I think you've already made up your mind about what the majority of people are because of you saying "...the fact that majority of people in the world have no conscience."
My view is opposite from your doomsday view. Two of my sibinglings are in South america right now, on a mission trip. One of my friends' brother is going into a major surgery, and I have seen so many people pull together for him. It's how every day things like this that make me believe [[even though we all have evil in us,too]] that the majority of people have more good in them then evil.
And, on top of that, noone is just pure evil. I'm sure that every single person in this world [[even the murderers, terriosits, etc.]] have done one kind thing in their life.
Cheer up! There's lots of good people (:

that movie made me cry :(
i could never do to him what those people did. and it makes me want to believe that, yes, there are some evil people out there. my conscious however tells me, "No Kim, they aren't EVIL, just misguided and ignorant" but in that movie they were abusive and belligerent. i was 8 when i saw it and ran out of the room crying at sight of the pure hatred i had for the men who were treating the poor guy so poorly. but i may be overly sensitive to it coming from a background of abuse...

EDIT: but one more thing to consider, the movie was not made in our time. it was made in a time where people were not comfortable with people different from them. there was little technology in the medical field compared to now so they did not see John Merrick as a human but instead as something scary. people often fear that they do not know...

I think that all humans are inherently good at heart, but it is the people around us who shape what we truly turn into. Most people cannot accept change, or difference, so the only way they can deal with it is in turning into someone without a conscience so that they don't have to think about the consequences for what they may do.

That is what I call "gang mentality." Even good people can be influenced by certain so-called evil people to ridicule someone very different from themselves. It's like they don't regard them as a person, but a freak to be made fun of. I do believe most people at heart are good people, and mean well.

you have to remember the time period that John Merrick lived. People didn't understand his condition.

I think today people would be more sympathetic.... and there are surgeries that could maybe help someone in that condition.

The majority of people have a herd mentality; they will follow and do whatever the mob does...but there will always be those to whom cruelty is abhorrent and they will always come to the rescue even if they have to do it alone.

I work with some seriously disturbed people and criminals and I have not found anyone truly evil. I think thattrue evil would be very rare.
