Hello Andrew! I've spoken with you before. Some sites I found valuable when building my own pond:

1. http://www.naturalwaterfall.com/index.asp. Click on "building your own water feature" for a free e-book. They want your e-mail address, but it's a great e-book.
2. http://ca.geocities.com/rsab2100/pond.html. One person's pond saga.
3. http://clearwaterlandscapes.com/pondphotos.htm. This site also has a good free e-book.
4. http://www.exit109.com/~gosta/pond.sht. Much detailed information.
5. http://www.pondmarket.com/. Interesting site.
6. http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/feature/backyard/BkPond.html. Very factual and simple. Or use http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/feature/backyard/pdf/Pond.pdf for a PDF format of this.
7. http://doityourself.com/stry/backyardpondfocal. Simple and factual also.

Search for images of "backyard pond" to get more ideas. Sure, your pond won't look like any of the photos, but you may see something small you want to incorporate into your own pond.

I built my own 800 gallon pond with waterfall, plants, fish, and landscaping. My own tips? Ponds must have an ecosystem.

1. Fish. Fish eat algae.
2. Plants. Plants provide shade and oxygen for fish and help keep algae from forming (algae hate shade). Both floating and submerged plants are helpful.
3. Aeration. A pump with a waterfall, sprayer, bubbler, fountain. Adds oxygen to the water and keeps the water circulating.
4. Filtration. I use a biofilter, a tub with foam blocks. Helps filter out algae.
5. Bacteria/enzymes. Liquid, powder, tablet. "Eat" pond wastes, keep water clear, fight algae.
6. Location! Your pond needs both sun and shade.
7. Location, Part 2: Do not put your pond where rainwater runoff will reach it. Runoff may contain pesticides, fertilizers, oil, and chemicals which will harm your pond life.
8. Some people use an ultraviolet light to kill algae. If you use a UV light, you cannot also use beneficial bacteria.

Good luck!
