ok I have a few dark green rocks that I really think are emeralds. What kind of person would I go see to help me find out?

If you went into a jewellers or an auctioneers that did jewellery auctions they would be able to tell you what stone it was. If you wanted tests done for its purity you would have to go to the gemolical assiciation. xx

Are they rocks, or do they have a luster to them? It could be a Tsavorite, or a tourmaline it might also be a adventurine. Also on wickipedia I found a sight that had the Ultramariphic rock, which make up a lot of the earth, so it could be just a plain old rock, take it to a gem specialist.

Or you can get a shard of glass and try to scratch a flat face of the stone with it. If it gets scratched by the glass, it's not emerald. But if the glass can't nick the stone, only then can you see your neighborhood geologist.
