While Jimmy Carter, the U.S. President with the second highest I.Q. of any President in 50 years (Clinton was the first), struggled valiantly to ethically arrange the release of 444 hostages from Iran, Reagan and his gang of thugs were secretly working 'behind-the-scenes' making unethical deals for the hostages' release.
On Reagan's inauguration day, this polished actor gleefully announced that the hostages had entered free air space even as he spoke.
Did he invite Carter to join him at the podium so they could raise their arms in mutual victory? No. Reagan took all the credit.
Only years later did we find out the truth of his arms-for-hostages deal with the Iranians. It became known as the Iran-Contra affair, one of this nation's most shameful scandals of all history.
Reagan wasn't anywhere near being the greatest President of this great nation. In fact, the top five WORST Presidents (#1 being the absolute worst) were:
5. Herbert Hoover
4. Richard Nixon
3. Ronald Reagan
2. George H.W. Bush
1. George W. Bush

Reagan's death, especially following the tragedy and torture of Alzheimer's disease, likely struck editors and reporters with a responsibility to go easy on the former president. But the overwhelming praise for a president who plunged the nation into its worst deficit ever, ignored and cut public money for the poor, while also ignoring the AIDS crisis, is a bit tough to take. Reagan's policies included slashing federal grants for poor students and cutting survivor benefits for families of the disabled.
Not to mention the Iran-contra scandal, failed 'supply-side economics,' the ludicrous invasion of Grenada, 241 dead Marines in Lebanon, and a costly military buildup that may have contributed to the breakup of the Soviet Union (there were plenty of other reasons too) but also kept us closer to nuclear war than at any time since the Cuban Missile Crisis, besides leaving us billions of dollars in debt.
And should we even mention the many senior Reagan officials, including ex-White House aide Michael Deaver and national security adviser Robert McFarlane, convicted of various offenses? What about Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger indicted but later pardoned by the first President Bush?

Reagan was NOT America's greatest president. Have you forgotten Lincoln, both Roosevelts, Washington?

When you say he was America's "greatest president," you're already making your biases obvious. He's not even in the top 10. Reagan put America in debt through tax cuts that disproportionately favoured the rich and through a huge increase in military funding. He funded the mujaheddin in Afghanistan in their fight against the Soviet Union; the mujaheddin eventually morphed into Al Qaeda and attacked the Twin Towers.

Yes, he funded the militaries of Central American nations who in turn killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Indian peasants. He was willing to sell arms to Iran (illegally, without Congressional approval) to fund right--wing groups in Latin America.
