Heck, if you like Roanoke, you have the entire I-81 corridor open to you. (I am assuming that you like the mountain/valley area and want to stay in that environment.) I have family that lives in Lynchburg, and I find that area pretty neat. (Whole areas of the town are separated by the mountain!) I have always been partial to Staunton and Leesburg also. If you want to "get away" from it all, look out towards Wise County or Highlands County. Wise is quiet and has a feeling of being "cut off" from everyone else. Highlands is very pretty, but it is getting expensive because a lot of people are buying vacation homes out there.

Myself, my fiance and I are looking at moving out to Louisa or Mineral. (OK, Mineral is in Louisa County but we are looking at the town seat of Louisa which is termed Louisa.) Of course, one of us works in the Richmond area and the other in the Charlottesville area and both of us would take a significant pay cut if we relocated. (Around a 50%.)

Good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for!
