My kids have moved out and since they have gone, I am a stickler about shutting off the lights, I only shower and wash my hair for about 5 minutes every day. My kids would literally run the water heater out. When I come home the lights are all out like I left them unless one of the kids come home while I am gone....they leave them all on. My son used to turn all the lights on in the house and the garage and I would wake up in the morning for work and they were all still on.
My laundry is minimal. I never dry my clothes in the dryer, and always hang them on the line.
Does it cost to leave the TV running, because I always fall asleep with the TV on?
Is it cheaper to leave the window air on or should I shut it off when I cool the house off?
How else can I cut down? I am worrying about the college tuition I just payed for my son and I am trying to cut way back.

2400 watts does equal 2.4 Kilowatts (Kw)

Assuming cost per Kw hr is $0.11

But 2.4 X 0.11 is not $2.40

It is $0.264 or 26.4 cents

It costs more to run the TV tnan a 100 watt bulb.

Most TV to-day use approximately 400 watts to 600 watts except Plasma TV's. Plasma TV sets use more electricity and produce more heat.

Cost of TV for 8 on for 8 hours $0.352 or 35.2 cents to $0.528 or 52.8 cents

Window A/C
If you can open windows to create a cross draft in the evening to cool down your home, you may not have to use your AC at all.

Open the windows and curtains in the evening too cool down the house.

Close the windows and curtains through the day. This often keeps your house cool enough to eliminate the use of the AC most of the time.

This can be a fairly large savings.

Check your electricity supplier. Most of them have a website with charts of power consumption of most common appliances and devices.

Good Luck.

Go to this U.S. Dept of Energy website to get valuable information about saving energy in your home: http://www.eere.energy.gov/consumer/your_home/

Turn down the temperature on your hot water heater. If you hot water heater doesn't have the actual temp on the dial, but more like a low and high indicator, turn the temp down, wait 24 hours, test the hot water temp coming out of your faucet. I use an instant thermometer, used in cooking. 115-120 degrees sufficient.

If your dishwasher heats the water while washing, turn off that feature if able. Also if your dishwasher, dries your dishes using a heat element, turn off that feature also.

Wash clothes in cold water. I only wash sheets, dish clothes, dish towels, wash clothes and towels in hot which is a personal preference.

Turn your hot water heater off when gone on vacation.

Turn off your computer if not using for a 2 hour period. Turn off your monitor if not using for 20 minutes. I noticed a $10 monthly reduction in my power bill by turning off my computer at night. I can't say for sure that is what caused the reduction, but it was the only power saving tip I had implemented at that time.

My 87 year old father would tell you to eat out. You won't need your refrigerator, stove or dishwasher. Ha!Ha!

one hundred W = 0.a million kW flow away the bulb lit for 10 hours and that makes use of a million kW-h of capability. My electrical energy expenditures approximately 15 cents/ kW-h. so as that 10 hours of sunshine expenditures approximately 15 cents. confident, it is in basic terms pennies. yet do it day in and time out, and you're able to do the maths (as human beings answering this query have additionally achieved).

100 watts X 24 hours = 2400 watts = 2.4 KW X cost
at 11 cents per KW it would be $2.40

Anything that uses electricity is cost you money. If not in use, turn it off and save a bundle
