#1. The Goals of the two events were different. 911 the goal was to fly the planes into buildings. The Goal in Turkey was to fly to Iran.

#2. On 911 there were four men per plane. Turkey it was two. They threatened to blow up the plane but thanks to safety measure put into place after 911, they had nothing and it was all a bluff.

#3. Safety measures taken after 911 kept the pilots safe in Turkey. The hyjackers never got into the cockpit. When the plane landed, the pilots kicked out the window and escaped, effectively trapping the plane on the ground.

#4. Turkey did not "take it down." The plane landed at the direction of the hyjackers because the pilot told them the plane did not have enough fuel to get to Iran.

#5. When the hyjackers decided to let women and kids off, the passengers acting on their own, having learned the lesson of 911 opened the back door and escaped, leaving the hyjackers with only six hostages.

#6. Knowing they were screwed, the hyjackers gave up after six hours.

The events in Turkey went well because of the safety measures taken after 911 and people knowing that ending up safe in a foreign nation is NOT the only outcome of the hyjacking.

Those four aircraft, two who left Boston's Logan and 2 who left JFK were too smart to engage in conversation. I am convinced they learned a valuable lesson when Swissair111 went down in fall 1998.

Swissair111 left Logan en route to Switzerland. At full Pax capacity and a cargo hold of equally valuable goods she encountered trouble shortly into flight. She also had a new gaming system on board. A gambling trial basis inflight entertainment. The company is deeply involved with satellites, stock markets and politicians. The owner changed his name after the crash and moved to Arkansas where he operates as Mike Snow. She never made it past Nova Scotia.

PBS had a study on the crash and by all accounts this has been written off as a fire on board. If you were not looking.
Her cargo hold contained enough gold bars, a Picasso and millions well worth the expedition. Yet, the report had numerous loopholes.
