Whoa - 'fluffer-' You were on the right track and you swerved and lost me with the statement "farmers aren't analytical" ! I can introduce you to a dozen farmers that can tell you how many drops of rain to produce a kernel of corn. Any successful farmer these days has a laptop tied to gps and the tractors on board computer. So, not only can he tell you how many drops of rain it takes, he can tell you the number of drops of fuel it takes and he can tell you where on the planet it came from. In my day, all I had was a piece of paper and a pencil, but I could have given you the same answers. RScott

Wow! I've never seen info like that. Eons ago I remember acre feet of water, but then you have to know how many gallons in an acre feet and how many plants per acre. Soil type, climate, also play a part. Trust me, farmers are not that analytical.....nor are the agronomist I know.

I'm not even sure the seed from these newer hybrid crossings are even viable next year and if they are, they would make some very strange children.

It all depends on the weather. More if it's hot, for example.

According to Bob Flowerdew, you should make a sort of gulley round the blocks of plants and fill it up with water every few days, they need a lot of water to plump up nicely. They also like a feed of a potassium-rich liquid fertiliser like tomato feed or comfrey liquid every 2 weeks.

Hybrids never breed true, but you could plant the seed and see what happens.
