What people are telling you to do is learn to draw from observation. That works for some and not for others. At least at first. But to be really good you do have to learn how to observe really closely.
But I would suggest that you get a used copy of the book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, Betty Edwards and do the exercises in the book. It will formally teach you how to "see" what you're looking at. And most of us aren't very good at actually seeing what is really there. You can get a copy of it on eBay for about $3-8. http://search.stores.ebay.com/drawing-right-side-brain_W0QQ_trksidZm37QQfasiZ1QQfbfmtZ1QQfromZR10QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ3QQsabfmtsZ2QQsascsZ2QQsbrbinZtQQsbrsrtZdQQsofpZ4
or you can get a copy of her second book, The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, for $7-12.
This book(s) will help you to develop the natural drawing skills that everyone has. Most people "can't" draw only because they haven't been trained. Finish either of these books, doing ALL of the exercises and in a few weeks or months you'll be drawing pictures of your family and friends that will have them amazed at your "talent."

Practice, practice, practice, and practice some more. Learn to draw sketches FAST; that's one of the most useful things to learn. You should be able to draw a semi-realistic sketch of a person or a crowd of people in less than 10 minutes when you get good at it.
If you don't have a copy already buy "How To Draw Anything", it's a very cheap book that's been around forever and gives beautifully simple tutorials on basic techniques.

first, if you want to be a good drawer, you must be a good imaginer or good watcher.
what do you want to draw? Human face? Watch over someone face. Look on the detail. What makes the face look so cute, so tough, so pretty.
If you want to draw animal, pay attention to its behaviour. watch, watch and watch.
And then, you start to draw. You must enjoy this activities. Practice a lot. The more you practice, the more you will be good.
Little tips for you : pay attention to the light and shadow of your object. That will make you understand more about what are you drawing. Good luck. :)

Make it a habit-draw everyday, start a collection of "how to draw" books, carry paper & pencils in a bag or fanny-pack so you always have them to doodle-good luck.
