Will we have to file separate or what? Will living apart screw us at tax time? Would it be better to stay single? We plan to live together eventually, but with our jobs & kid situation, it will be at least 5 years from now.

Consult the www.irs.gov site regarding filing joint returns for Federal Taxes, but, as I recall you must be living together for a specified period of time to file the joint return. There are exceptions say, members of Armed Forces, etc. This is not a simple answer and must be researched to find the proper answer. State taxes are a whole set of other answers, depends on each of your state laws, do they have state income where you live, an answer to this question cannot be given unless you give more details of your situation.

For Federal income tax, it makes no difference. For state taxes, it depends on the states involved. For better answers, post your question under Business & Finance > Taxes > United States.
