These cars had an old point style ignition system that needed to be udjusted quite often. The points are delicately balanced and affect the timing of the car. Couple that with the fact that it's old technology, technology that has been discarded for a reason, and you have your answer.

There was a lot more maintenance required on the older cars. They had points ignition, and the points would wear and then they would need to be adjusted. They used carburetors instead of fuel injection, so the carb would have to be adjusted every so often.

There was a lot less to go wrong with them, And you could get to them to work on them. You would have to keep up with them, but all in all, if you did the work, they would run. Oh, yeah, one other think the 50's were 6V systems for the most part so the batteries wouldn't have much power in the winter, if you lived in a cold climate. good luck.

well its like this. if it has the original engine, those parts have been sitting in there for somewhere between 50-60 years, and i cant say i have anything that has lasted that long, especially something that is mechanized.

so some parts are realllllly old, and others arent. those really old ones are going to give sooner or later, leading to more "breaking down" than a newer car.

They aren't as reliable, but are built more durable. If we were to couple today's tech with '50's style building the cars would be indestructible.
