This is general rule for Europe, might be different in some countries!
Long distance travel, booked on the same date, mostly the bus is cheaper.
Flights themselves are often cheap, but the taxes and so add so much to the ticket that they are mostly at least twice what a bus ticket cost.
Trains do not differ so much in price depending on when you book, so if you book shortly before traveling or on the day itself often the train is cheaper than flying, but almost always more than going by bus.
But there are exceptions, if you travel within the Netherlands do not bother to travel by bus unless there is no train going where you need to go, not worth the little you might safe.
The UK and the international high speed trains have a cheaper rate for early booking for reserved seats, but still not as cheap as early booking for the bus.
And if you travel a lot the train passes will work out cheaper than individual tickets in any kind of travel, but not cheaper than the bus passes.
And I red here that there are Airlines experimenting with Air passes. (And if you have an intercontinental flight, often domestic flights or European flights come cheap or free.)
Add to the price of the flight the money it cost to go to and from the airport, can be little, can also be a lot if you travel in the early hours of morning or late in the evening and need a taxi.

Since you don't say, I'm assuming you are in the U.S. Travel across the country is cheapest by bus, but you definitely get what you pay for. I have survived a couple of bus trips, a few years ago, surrounded by, packed in among, the absolute dregs of society. I would never do it again. Spend a little more and take the train. Seriously.
