It was a stock ecotec 2.4L now after the rebuild cracking about 330 hp to 340 hp was use 5w-30 I think . Its first oil change after the rebuild I found slug a buddy told me to try castro syntech 5W-50 does that sound right?

sounds like the engine didnt get properly cleaned when it was rebuilt, or the rings didnt get broken in right leaving a bit of blowby making the sludge. you could change to a thicker oil like the 5w50, and see what it does, but it probably wont help much. was there anything wrong with it before you rebuilt it?

Can't really go wrong with any of Castrol's products. I've worked shops, parts counter, and at the oval tracks. Their stuff is really good. I currently use 5w-50 on a 2.4 liter and it does the job well. What will really do the job if you plan on keeping the car and don't mind spending a few extra 'frog skins', try royal purple. Little more high end but you'll be able to use it a bit longer, get better performance from your car. It's a bit of a trade off but I guarantee you will be happy with the performance you get with royal purple. Good sh*t!!! Happy motoring!

Castrol synthetic or Mobil 1 will hold up to the higher heat and pressures a lot better than petroleum based oil.
