I know Tchaikovsky is not modern though. I mean something like Ravel's Pavane for a Dead Princess.

The piece the first answerer is referring to is Adagio in G minor by Tomaso Albinoni which I also strongly recommend.

Also consider:

Un Bel Di Vedremo from the opera Madame Butterfly by Puccini(the suicide scene, incidentally)
Song to the Moon from the opera Rusalka by Dvorak
Vocalise Op. 34 no. 14 by Rachmaninoff
Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor by Rachmaninoff
Winter from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi
Bachianas Brasilieras No. 5 by Heitor Villa-Lobos
Meditation by Thais
Gymnopedie No. 2 by Satie
Nocturne Op. 51 No.3 by Sibelius
Chaconne by Tomaso Vitali

The first movement-O Fortuna-from the choral piece Carmina Burana by Carl Orff

Nocturne No. 20 op. Posth. by Chopin(as I've mentioned in response to other user's questions, this song is to DIE for)

Hope this helps!

Barber's Adagio for Strings would be a good candidate. The other suggestions above are good too.

The Sixth. What a moving piece of music. I like the First too, the "Winter Daydreams" symphony.

Albioni has a tremendously sorrowful work, "Adagio" (is it from the Swan? I don't recall)
Also Peer Gynt Suite by Grieg has Asa's death which is also sad
