1)The first step is becoming a graduate assistant. A lot of graduate assistants played football at the college level but this is not a prerequisite. A lot of it is who you know. Try to find a high school or college coach to recommend you. You have to have a college degree and pursuing a graduate degree at the school.

Most graduate assistants do a lot of "gofer" work and not much coaching. But they learn a lot about how a college football team operates and also make a lot of valuable contacts.

2) After your stint as a graduate assistant (GA), use your contacts to get hired as an assistant coach. You may start out at some lower level school like division II but you might start out at division I. You also may have to travel to virtually anywhere in the country.

3) Hopefully, your abilities will be recognized and you can rise through the ranks. Your goal is to become an offensive or defensive coordinator.

4) The next step is to pursue a head coaching job. Again, a lot of it is who you know. Its important to make a lot of contacts with other coaches. When vacancies come open, apply for them.

5) You land a head coaching job usually at a small school. You build an impressive win-loss record and move up to a division I school.

6)The whole process could take 10-20 years and a lot of moving around.

Edit. If you want to be a college coach, DO NOT start as a high school coach. High school coaches coach high school and are not sought after by colleges. There are a few exceptions but stay away if you want to be a college coach.

I agree with a lot of what the first poster said except for being a high school coach. I started out coaching freshman football after my first year of college. The next year I was asked to coach the team. The year after that I was made a varsity assistant coach. I did my best to learn as much as I could about the game. After several years as a varsity coach I started applying for coaching jobs at small colleges. I must have applied for 100 college coaching jobs over several years. I got a lot of rejection letters and no-responses. Finally, at the age of 27 I was interviewed and received my first coaching job in college at a division 3 school. I achieved my dream of becoming a college coach. My advice to you would be if you didn't play in college, volunteer to coach at your local high school. The first four years I coached at the U.S. level I wasn't even paid. Also, attend AS many coaching clinics as you can. You can learn about the game and make new contacts in the industry. Good Luck!

got to be a high school coach first and have a good record and the college will call you if they think you are any good. Also most high schools require you be a junior high school coach first.
