I am thinking about begining a career in child psychology. What is child psycholgy really? I like to help people, and I love children. Does this mean that you can become a guidance counselar for school? What is the atmosphere of the job? What are the common ours to work? Does anyone have this as a career? It would be worth it to see a child or teen battling his/her problems. Any other information you can give me would be great. Thanks!!!!!!

"I am thinking about beginning a career in child psychology - what is it?" Sorry, but that struck me funny.

. The fact that YOU like it so much is THE first step.
It doesn't pay extremely well, and there are a LOT of heartaches in that profession especially if you try to fix everybody's problems. You will NEVER be that smart!
But if you don't lose that desire and Drive to help kids, you'll LOVE the profession. Forget about 'psychiatry' as that is TOO tough.
get your master's in some kind of Psychology and you'll love your life despite the heart-breaking scenes of child abuse you'll see. often.
Read ALL the psychology books. Google the Internet.

You can do a lot of things in that arena even before you get your degree. One is to become a big brother/sister for youth. Another is sign up with the local public schools to get support for at risk kids. They have lists of them. Another is to go to communities that allow for this kind of support and be a mentor. When all is said and done you'll find out if you have the apptitude for this kind of work.

contact the university you would like to attend. ask them to explain what the course entails. ask them for the book list and go to the library and read some of them. get a feel for the topic before deciding. its a very rewarding, yet gruelling job. you have to be very dedicated.
read up on some case studies first to see if it is really what you want to do.
good luck
