If there is someone out there who is 'in the know', I would love to hear from you. Anything you can tell me about types of mixes, paints, laquers etc. would be welcomed. Also, where can I buy more moulds from - mushrooms, fairies etc.?

I don't know where you can buy molds, but there are several mixes. You can use portland cement, which you buy in your local hardware store and just mix with water; or you can make hypertufa, which looks and acts like stone but it's very light. Here is a recipe.

I don't think you can paint stone ornaments. The only painted ones are the plastic ones (also called "resin" or "alabastrite" - it's just plastic) You can buy colored powders in the hardware store and mix them into your concrete or whatever.

I have used candy molds and flowerpots to make small cement sculptures. I make hypertufa planters in big plastic tubs, whatever size I want my planter to be.
