Because really, when you think about it, it's really a pretty interesting question. One way it makes sence, the other it doesn't.

I've observed there are two completely different understandings. One is basically the same as purpose, i.e. what were we put on earth to do? We derive meaning from living for that purpose. This understanding of meaning requires a Creator/God. Meaning comes from God so seek God.

The other understanding is "what can I do to get through life in the face of the overwhelming pointlessness of life?" This second understanding is the one people have who think we can create our own meaning. This is basically a search for good feelings; mostly good feelings about ourselves, i.e. inflate our self esteem.

Look, everything is here for a meaning. The life that you're living has its own meanings and a purpose ofcourse. This is indeed a very interesting question which most of us ignore. Everything on earth has its own meaning, purpose and significance. In fact the earth itself has a meaning and a purpose which is to serve mankind through its healthy environment unlike other planets which lack in oxygen, water etc. So when you go to ur bed tonite, think about ur existence and wonder why u r here and what for and why is everything acting the same for years like the sun (giving us light for billions of years and hasnt given up yet) and the trees, moon, sky, stars etc. Just think who could have made those and why would they be here. All these questions, one must ask himself to gain the real meaning of life. If you wanna know the exact answer, jump into the religions like islam which also clears up the answer for the question. I hope this helps. Have a gr8 day!

When the question "What is the meaning of life?" is asked, one of a variety of questions may be implied, such as: "What is the nature of life (and of the universe in which we live)?","What is the significance of life?","What is the purpose of, or in, (one's) life?",and "What is valuable in life?"A range of competing answers and arguments have been given to these questions, from scientific theories, to philosophical, theological, and spiritual explanations.

Philosophy of the meaning of life-
While scientific approaches to the meaning of life aim to describe empirical facts about human existence, philosophers are usually more concerned about the relationship between ideas. For example, philosophers have considered such questions as: "Is the question 'What is the meaning of life?' a meaningful question?"; "What does the question 'What is the meaning of life?' mean?"; and "If there are no objective values, then is life meaningless?" Some philosophical disciplines have also aimed to develop an understanding of life that explains, regardless of how we came to be here, what we should do now that we are here (such as humanism, which presents a code of conduct - see the ethics of humanism explained below).

What is the purpose in one's life?
Reaching Heaven in the afterlife can be seen as a universal meaning of life or goal for followers of Abrahamic religions. Other universal teachings, or meanings, to be followed in virtually all religions are "The Golden Rule" and simple living.
