I want to add more RAM to my computer. I have a 512 MB DIMM module and there are four slots. Do I have to add 512 MB modules (so they match) or can I add a 1GB module with my 512 MB module. Or since it's removeable, can I remove the 512 MB module and replace it with a 1GB module, our would I lose all the programs my computer is running. Maximum memory is 4096 MB.

yes you can mix and match sizes of ram sticks providing they are the same speed,

but put the biggest (1 gig) in the first slot the one with the 512 in now. and the 512 in the second slot, this will give you 1.5 gigs of memory

Do whatever you feel like. All of the scenarios you suggested would work fine. The best solution is to simply add the 512 MB into a secondary slot. This would give you 1.5 GB of RAM, more then enough for most tasks.

Also RAM is random access memory, and not used to store data when the computer is off; the hard drive performs that function instead.

you can add a 1gb module
but if you mother board supports ddr
you will not be running in ddr mode since both mem modules need to be same size. parity and speed and usually in slot 0 and slot 2
btw xp supports only 2gb
vista 3gb

Just add a second 512MB stick with the same specs as the existing one for 1GB total. XP assumed.

Just add a 1GB with your 512MB. The more RAM you have the more faster your PC will be. I'd put 2GB of RAM if I were you , since windows vista requries at LEAST 1GB of RAM.
