I really admire the series that begins with "Master and Commander" by Patrick O'brian. High quality historical fiction about a British naval officer during the wars with Napoleon.
The Horatio Hornblower series by C.S Forester is also excellent and deals with the same subject matter.
If you like caveman stories the "Earth's Children" series by Jean Auel has to be the best novels about prehistoric people ever written. The first of the series is called "The Clan of the Cavebear". The sixth and final episode is not released yet.
I enjoyed the Harry Potter series for light entertainment.
