Not all programs keep running but some others do like virus scanning, defragmentors, and others. Just make sure you dont get rid of your hibernation files or you cant hibernate again

I personally think that Hibernate takes so long to recover that I might as well just shut down and turn it back on when I'm ready. Standby mode uses more battery power, since the laptop needs to keep powering your RAM so that it doesnt get erased. You will usually need to recharge your laptop pretty soon if you left it on standy, so this continuous charge/discharge cycle will affect your battery life a bit in the long run. Hibernate mode copies your RAM contents to your hard drive, so the laptop doesnt need to waste power keeping the RAM alive. The only problem is the time taken to wake up...but as long as that's not a bother to you then it's safe to use hibernate.

it depends on the level of hibernation. I have my laptop set to shut the monitor down after a certain amount of time, but I allow the HD to run. If you let the HD shut down, the programs will stop. Usualy, these settings can be found in the settings for the screen saver (there should be a powersaving option on the tab)
If you are going to leave the HD running, make sure your laptop is in a cooler area and is well ventilated to prevent any risk of overheating.

Hibernate mode is another name for sleep mode. You can have as many programs open as you want, which will not interfere with the hibernate mode. When your computer comes back from hibernate mode, it will bring back all of the files that you had when you put the computer in hibernate. Hibernate mode is similar to shutting down your computer, except with Hibernate, the computer doesn't close all of the programs. It saves everything you had.

Nope - the laptop goes to sleep! BUT when you reopen it, programmes that were running are still there! And if you were actually running a virus scan or something, it will continue from where it was left.

it saves the state your computer is in at the moment you press hibernate...that means when you turn it back on, all the programs that were running when you turned it off will be there...you use it so you can save power but not have to close your importnat programs

The unit shuts off but all the programs you have running remain in a special memory so you do not have to reboot. I use it all the time it really saves time.

the laptop ( actually the OS ) takes a snapshot of the system and freezes it if you will
then it hibernates
when it awakes it leaves you exactly where you left off
