About 15 miles to the gallon highway, 12 city. Some people young, and old, still run them!

Depends on the engine. A big V8 with dual quads used more gas than a in line 6 cylinder. Automatic transmissions were hugely inefficient, many had only 2 forward speeds. Your standard 3 speed manual wasn't much better.
Most cars back in the 1950's were the gas guzzler type. You'd be lucky to get 16 mpg highway and maybe 12 mpg city driving.
During the 1960's the first compacts started showing up, still you were lucky to get 20 mpg highway and perhaps 14 mpg city.
Gasoline was like 25 cents a gallon back then so nobody really paid much attention to trivial matters like gas mileage.

I had a 1959 Ford truck that got around 15 miles per gallon, not that much less than todays trucks

In 1962 my first car was a 1952 Chevrolet. Gasoline was so cheap then that no one bothered to measure. I am sure I never did.
