This is a group of galaxies, and star clusters in our region of the universe. Andromeda Galaxy is the largest of the group as I remember. It includes several parts. The number 13 comes to mind but I can't say just why without researching a bit. Two easily visible members, (from the southern hemisphere) are the Magellanic Clouds that are sort of satellites of the Milky Way.
I would imagine that a search on Sky and Telescope or some similar site would give you many more details.
Put "Local Group", (with quotes), on the search box and you will probably get more information than you will ever need.
I haven't had to deal with term for several years now.
