Fertilizing alone, will not thicken up the turf. Core aeration and over seeding will help to thicken up your turf. Rent an aerator from your local rental center. If you haven't been watering on a regular basis or the soil is hard and dry, you'll need to water it for a couple days straight to loosen it up a little and make for a better penetration of the aerator's tines. After aerating the entire turf area, you can either rake up the plugs, mow them up, or let them breakdown naturally, which takes a couple weeks or so. After aerating, you can seed the entire area with your type (preferably) of grass seed. Water the lawn on a daily basis to stimulate the seed to germinate. Aerating the lawn will help bring oxygen to the roots and open up the root zone to allow moisture and applied nutrients to reach the level where they are utilized most by the turf. In a month or so, you should see a marked improvement on the thickness and health of your lawn.. Hope this answers your question.

You may need a "lawn reviver" but I'm not a fan of chemicals. I've had a problem with moss growing instead of grass and I applied the following on the advice of a neighbour:
Cut the lawn real short, rake it really well to the point of removing earth covered with moss, plant new lawn seeds, leave it it to grow until next season and then set your mower to a higher position so it doesn't cut the grass too short.
A more rapid way is to have your lawn repaired by professionals who will bring turf and adjust it.
All the best.

You can "improve" your lawn's thickness by planting more grass seed, maybe a different type than you have now. Ask a pro at a garden center or at Lowes.

Get one of those things that put little holes in the dirt. (areator, wrong spelling I know). Don't mow the grass short, so it will go to seed.
