Well, if you are in Texas, it's pretty common. Being that Texas is called the "Lone Star State" five-pointed, three-dimensional stars are EVERYWHERE here. In other contexts it can be simply for decor or it can be a good luck or warding sign and dates back to old European superstitions and/or the Wiccan beliefs. It could be any number of things but those are the ones that come to mind.
