I would like to know why all of a sudden products from China are dangerous for us? We've been importing products from them for years and nobody ever said anything before. But recently they've been recalling products for poison, lead, and other reasons. What about the products that were imported in the 70's, 80's & 90's, were they toxic for us too?

Most of the answers are based on assumptions and not facts.

Fact:
China is rigorously dealing with this problem, to the point where one high ranking public official who was convicted of accepting bribes that resulted in shoddy medicines to be produced which killed some people was recently put to death.

Fact:
Companies like Mattel Toys put a lot of pressure on manufacturers to keep costs down with little oversight. While the blame can be pointed at China, it is our corporate greed that needs to be looked at in this global market world.

Fact:
China is shutting down, fining, jailing, reprimanding companies and individuals who are responsible for this.

Fact:
China has an amazing track record of fixing huge problems in the most efficient and best way possible. Example, a few years ago their banking system was near collapse. They went to the west to places like Bank of America to help them put their banking industry in order. Today it is very healthy.

My assumption:
In a year, a lot of this will be forgotten and you all will figure out something else to bash China about without looking at the facts first. That is in your nature.

We didn't have the volume of products imported from China back then Today, we import food products and children's toys. Who knew we import wheat from China?

A lot changed after NAFTA. Toy manufacturing was moved to Mexico. After China joined the World Trade Orgainization, that's when most of the top manufacturing moved there. Add to that the deregulation in the name of free markets and corporations that kust get larger and larger. There is no way they can keep track of their suppliers but they demand lower prices so they cut corners.

Potentially, yes; the standards are much lower, and they are more easily circumvented in a communist regime.

Politically all products of a communist regime are dangerous in that they perpetuate the notion that cheap means good... If the people in a neighbouring state were subjected to the same conditions and wage scales as the Chinese workers, there would be moral outrage and condemnation; anyone buying a product made by them would be considered rightly a slaver and ostracised.

China's economy has been growing at a fantastic rate. That means there are lots of opportunities for businesses there. It also means that there's more opportunities for very marginal or dishonest businesses to provide sub-standard or dangerous goods to importers and outsourcers desperate to get on the cheap-Chinese-labor gravy train.

I find it interesting that U.S. corporations & consumers just LOVED the Chinese due to cheap labor costs, thus cheap prices on imported goods- well guess what? Not only were labor costs cheap, but safety concerns were cheap too. American labor might be more expensive, thus rising prices, BUT America has one of the finest records of product safety. Yes, I DO think the Chinese could vastly improve their safety record, but not with the current government in place.

Yes the quality and materials have always been a concern for years. It is just recently that the government has gotten the balls to admit that they are hazardous to our health. Mexico and other Latin American countries are not much better and in some cases worse.
