On google earth, when zooming in i can get good clear pictures pretty close up in some places particularly in the UK and some cities eg, new york, but i cant get a clear close up of other places around the world. Am I doing something wrong or do I need to do something to make it better? please help.

Google Earth is a "moziac" of the latest satellite images it finds on the web. Some are weeks old while the black and white, blurrier ones could be 15 years old or more.
Bottom line, you can't fix them. As GE finds newer images, it automatically replaces the older ones.

Google Earth get high resolution satellite picture for populated areas and famous areas i.e. the Sydney Olympics site and Chicago. You are not doing anything wrong, you will have to wait for a while until they update it. Other free on-line services such as live maps (google search it) have better resolution.
Hopes This Helps

No you are doing it right, the problem lies with Google Earth, certain areas are taken in much higher definition than others. As you have no doubt noticed none of the areas are actually live, they are updated but some are pretty old. Most of the latest areas do appear to be better quality but some, especially areas in the US which are security classified are very poor. Pity but thats the way it is. My own area is over six years old, I know from the car outside which was sold six years ago.

No there is no problem. When i was the uk some months ago i was at barking an i could see a clear view of it. Now i am in africa, in Nigeria to be certain and i do not have a good veiw of place too. I think very soon people would be able to have good view of things from other places.
