I think currently Chris Daughtry is a singer who is Christian but not a Christian artist.
Chrsitian arist: Most or all songs are based on bibical themes.
Singer who is Christian: Christian beliefs and themes may pop up in the the songs. Ideally the person tries to live a Christian life and does not sing songs that would promote sin.

Chris's first band was called Cadence they were more of a Christian Rock Band, His song HOME is heard on Christian Radio!

I was wondering the same thing and came across this article/review on Al Menconi's website: http://www.almenconi.com/reviews.php?art_id=1006
It says that in the liner notes, he thanks his "Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ" and also gives thanks to some friends who are members of other Christian bands (Mac Powell from Third Day, etc...). So, even though his lyrics are not explicitely Christian, he does appear to be a born-again Christian.
